APPLIED REMOTE SENSING FOR VEGETATION MAPPING

Description

Land use and land cover changes has become important for managing natural resources and monitoring environmental changes. Knowledge of vegetation mapping is important for evaluating land use and land cover changes and has been applied to assess health of forest’s, grassland, agricultural resources, water bodies.  Regular viewing of land surface from space is crucial to understanding the impact of man’s activities on natural resources. In this regard, remote sensing has become important science and art of getting information of an object from space. Through remote sensing, data is in abundance for individuals, students, government workers and organizations to monitor environmental changes. A critical factor, however, is the technique of assessing, retrieving, evaluating, manipulation and processing of these satellite data to derive meaningful information.

Participants will therefore acquire hands-on skills for use in Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing as a tool to retrieve, store, process, analyze, visualize and interpret land cover and land use changes.

  • Concepts of Remote Sensing and GIS
  • Introduction to Remote Sensing and GIS tools
  • Information retrieval using Remote Sensing tools
  • Pre-process land cover and land use images
  • Classify land cover maps and images
  • Assessment of land cover and land use accuracy assessment

Staff and Students, Environmentalist, Government workers in the forestry and natural resource management.

Requirements

No prior knowledge of Remote Sensing or GIS is required. A personal Laptop is required.
