MSc/PhD Sustainable Energy Management
The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) is a public-funded national institution established by an Act of Parliament, Act 830 in December 2011 to provide leadership in science, technology and management of energy and natural resources and be a centre of excellence in these critical areas. The efficient harnessing and management of energy and natural resources are critical for attaining a nation’s sustainable development agenda. The future survival of nations will, in part, be dependent on their capacity to efficiently plan and manage energy resources. The quality and quantity of trained personnel with the capacity to develop and sustain a vibrant renewable energy industry is currently not available. As part of providing quality education, the University will provide an environment for training students with a high sense of professionalism, committed to problem-solving, active in community partnership and who approach their work with integrity.
2.0 NATIONAL RELEVANCE
The University seeks to produce experts and provide cutting-edge research to support Ghana’s development in energy and natural resources. For example, there are growing trends to develop biomass for sustainable bioenergy from forestry (fuel wood), agriculture (silage, manure, straw and husks) and waste (food waste and industrial waste). The Ghana Energy Commission in a document on the draft bioenergy policy of 2010 indicated that the industry requires adequate capacity in engineering, science and technology. The quality and quantity of trained personnel with the capacity to develop and sustain a vibrant biofuel industry is currently not available and should be developed quickly. Current energy trends on a global basis are focused on the development of biofuels. The Ministry of Lands and Natural resources will be one of the key Ministries that the UENR will collaborate with. The vision of the Ministry is to ensure the sustainable management and utilization of Ghana’s lands, forests, wildlife and mineral resources for socio-economic growth and development.
3.0 ALIGNMENT WITH UENR MISSION
The program is aligned with UENR mission which seeks “to promote the development of human resources and skills required to solve critical energy and natural resources challenges of society and undertake interdisciplinary academic, research, and outreach programmes in engineering, science, economics and environmental policy”.
Moreover it is also aligned with the aims of the University which include the following:
- provide higher education in science, technology and sustainable harnessing and management of energy and natural resources through teaching and research to all persons suitably qualified and capable of benefiting from such education;
- provide technical and other skills services and contribute to improving the management and use of Ghana’s energy and natural resources;
- provide leadership and be a role model institution, promoting the design and construction of energy-efficient buildings and create eco-friendly environments;
Other objectives of the specific programme are outlined below:
Philosophy and Objectives of the Programme
The lack of trained experts in sustainable energy management within Ghana and other parts of Africa is a set-back and hence, this programme will bridge this gap. This programme will train students to become critical energy problem solvers by providing them with a good knowledge of utilizing waste energy stream, minimise energy loses, economic analysis; cost-benefit analysis of alternative energy policy options, world energy markets; and risks associated with energy options. The programme will develop students ability to use modern tools such as integrated resource management, Geo-Information Science (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), advanced energy resources modelling, strategic planning with a strong understanding of policy development and implementation.
4.0 THE TARGET MARKET
The Sustainable Energy Management (SEMA) programme is open to all applicants having the requisite technical background knowledge: undergraduates of renewable energy technologies, any person interested in pursuing masters and PhD, professionals with industry experience and those with degrees in other branches of engineering and sciences.
