DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCINECE AND INFORMATICS

Programme Title: MASTER OF SCIENCE/MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY/DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

1) Background Information

The MSc./M.Phil./PhD. Degree program in Computer Science is designed for individuals with strong quantitative and analytical skills and strong interests in Computer Science and its applications. It provides rigorous training in Computer Science and methodologies that are suitable for applications in research, collaboration and consulting on a broad spectrum of problems. The program stresses the theory and concepts underlying Computer Science application in the field of health, computational sustainability, modelling of energy systems, business, climate, Agriculture, etc. The primary goal is to prepare students for independent careers in the above-mentioned fields.

2) Target Group

The Postgraduate studies in Computer Science will serve the needs of those having BSc, MSc./M.Phil degrees with strong computing component or background and wishing to extend their expertise in Computer Science for the purpose of modelling real-world situations in Biology, Engineering, Natural Resource and Business, Finance, etc..

3) Admission Requirements

  1. Master of Science (MSc.) Degree in Computer Science (By Coursework + Project)

The criteria for admission into the MSc in Computer Science (By Coursework and Project) programme would be as follows, provided the candidate has six credit passes including three core and three elective science related subjects:

  1. Candidates with Bachelor degree in Computer Science or Information Technology from the University of Energy and Natural Resources or its equivalent from a recognized university with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division.
  2. Candidates with Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science from the University of Energy and Natural Resources or its equivalent from a recognized university with a minimum CGPA of 2.5/4.0 and a Bachelor of Science in relevant science or engineering based disciples.
  3. All candidates must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity and effective decision making and problem solving potentials.
  4. Masters of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Degree in Computer Science

The criteria for admission into the MPhil Computer Science (By Research) programme would be as follows, provided the candidate has six credit passes including three core and three elective science related subjects:

  1. Candidates with a Bachelor‟s degree in Computer Science, Informatics or Information Technology from the University of Energy and Natural Resources or its equivalent from a recognized university with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division.
  2. Candidates with Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science from the University of Energy and Natural Resources or its equivalent from a recognized university with a minimum CGPA of 2.5/4.0 and a Bachelor of Science in relevant science or engineering based disciples.
  3. All candidates must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity and effective decision making and problem solving potentials

iii. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science

The criteria for admission into the PhD in Computer Science programme would be as follows, provided the candidate has six credit passes including three core and three relevant science subjects: Note that all the conditions below must be satisfied:

  1. Candidate must have a BSc. degree in Computer Sciences, Informatics or Information Technology or a BSc degree in a related discipline plus a PGD in Computer Sciences from a recognized university with a minimum of 2.5/4.0 CGPA.
  2. Candidate must have an MPhil in Computer Science or its equivalent from a recognized university with a minimum of 3.0/4.0 CGPA
  3. Candidate must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity for independent work, maturity, effective decision making and problem solving potentials.

4) Qualifying Examination

All candidates seeking admission to our Graduate Computer Science programme are required to obtain an admission form from the School of Graduate Studies and may be subjected to a qualifying examination/interview or both. Candidates’ performance in the qualifying examination would be used by the Department to select students who would be recommended to the School of Graduate Studies for provisional admission into the programme.

In addition, candidates are to submit a written research proposal along with their admission forms.

5) Programme Duration and Registration

  1. Masters by course work shall be of 2 semester modular-style, and on full time/weekend basis and shall be of 2 semester-equivalent duration.
  2. The Master degree programmes (MPhil or MSc by research) may be run on full-time or part-time basis. For full-time registration, the minimum duration shall normally be four semesters and maximum of eight semesters. For part-time registration, the minimum duration shall be six semesters and maximum of ten semesters, from the date of registration.

iii. Registration for the Doctor of Philosophy degree programme shall be on full-time and part-time basis. For full-time registration, the minimum duration of the programme shall be eight semesters (maximum ten semesters); the minimum and maximum duration shall be ten and twelve semesters respectively for part-time registration.

Note: Doctoral research will commence only after candidate has been presented and passed the Comprehensive Examination

6) Mode of Delivery

Lectures will be delivered via lectures, Project works, field trips and seminars.

DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Programme Title: M.Sc./MPhil in Environmental Planning and Development (EPD)

1) Background Information

Planning is our daily behaviour with regards to problem solving. Planning is futuristic in orientation and generally seeks to ensure intergenerational equity in the use of resources. To achieve sustainable development therefore, planning requires our most urgent attention. While the Department of Geography and Sustainable Development will be offering a number of MSc. programmes, the MSc. Environmental Planning and Development (EPD) will be one of its pioneer and important post graduate programmes.

The MSc. programme in Environmental Planning and Development has been designed for students and professionals wishing to enhance their career prospects in the environmental governance and regional development sectors. The programme aims to deepen their knowledge of subject areas previously studied as part of the BSc. Programme and to provide the training and skills required for its adaptation in the development arena. This will produce graduates with advance knowledge and skills for environmental planning and regional development

2) Target Group

The Environmental Planning and Development (EPD) programme is open to all applicants having the requisite technical background knowledge: First degree holders of environmental planning, planning, development studies, environmental studies, geography, economics, natural resources management and professionals with industry experience interested in pursuing MSc. degree in environmental planning and regional development.

3) Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission into the Masters Research Degree programme, candidates must be graduates of this University or any other University recognised by Academic Board and shall normally have obtained a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) degree in the relevant field (eg. environmental planning, planning, development studies, environmental studies, geography, economics, natural resources management etc).

For non-research Masters degree candidates, holders of Bachelors degree with a minimum of three (3) years working experience may be considered for admission. Holders of post graduate diploma certificates with excellent classification may be admitted to non-research Masters programmes. The Departments may require further selection by examination and/or interview.

4) Programme Duration and Registration

Master degree programmes (MPhil or MSc. by research): This programme may be run on full-time or part-time basis. For full-time registration, the minimum duration shall normally be four semesters and maximum of six semesters. For part-time registration, the minimum duration shall be six semesters and maximum of ten semesters, from the date of registration. Masters by course work shall be of four semester’s system, and on full time basis only for four semesters.

5) Mode of Delivery

Lectures, practical field visits, studio exercises, tutorial and seminars constitute the modes of delivery.

Fulltime: Week days via lectures, project works, field trips and seminars.

Part-time: Weekends via lectures, Project works, field trips and seminars.

DEPARTMENT OF AGRIBUSINESS

Programme Title:-   MBA/MPhil in Agribusiness Management

1) Background Information

Agribusiness is the business of agricultural production which includes food production, seed supply, agrochemicals, farm machinery, distribution, processing, marketing, and retail sales. Agribusiness is of local and global importance, encompassing a wide range of activities that contribute to the supply of food. It is also a dynamic business that must respond to advances in technology, to major changes in trade and policy, and to an ever-changing, consumer-driven supply chains.

The MBA/MPhil in Agribusiness Management is designed to develop professionals equipped with managerial and administrative skills and knowledge in agricultural related businesses including production, marketing, management, finance, trading and general business administration. The program offers training on the application of marketing, management, finance and economics to address agribusiness management problems.

The MBA/MPhil in Agribusiness Management is meant for individuals seeking managerial-level careers in agribusiness, food, and production agriculture sectors. The program will also offer training on the application of marketing, management, finance and economics to address agribusiness management problems. The aim of the MBA/MPhil Agribusiness Management programs are to help students gain a better understanding of the industrial and business world and its needs, thereby prepare them for managerial roles, enrich their skills and provide them with competencies relevant to their careers.

3) Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission into the MPhil or MBA Agribusiness Management programmes, candidates must be graduates of this University or any other analogous University recognised by Academic Board and shall normally have obtained a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) degree in the relevant field (eg. Agribusiness, agriculture, natural resource management, economics, development studies, accounting and commerce, business administration, economics, natural resources management etc).

DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE AND CROP PRODUCTION

1)              Programme Title:

MSc/MPhil/PhD. in Crop Science with the following specialization in

  • Agronomy
  • Plant Pathology
  • Crop Physiology
  • Postharvest Technology
  • Crop Protection

3)              Background Information and Justification

(i) Master of Science (M.Sc.)

The normal duration is eighteen calendar-months, but where a candidate spends more than eighteen calendar months for the degree, he shall renew his registration at the beginning of each academic year. The registration of a candidate shall normally lapse if after twenty-four months of full-time (thirty-six months in the case of part-time registration), he has not fulfilled the requirements for the degree.

(ii) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.)

The normal duration is not less than four semesters after initial registration (or six semesters in the case of part-time registration). The registration of a candidate shall normally lapse if after eight semesters (ten semesters in the case of part-time registration), the candidate has not fulfilled the requirements for the award of the degree. M.Phil. students are to register for a maximum of 15 units to include courses and project; two interdisciplinary courses (3 units each, total of 6 units), one course in their respective unit/programme (3 units), Project (6 units). These will sum up to 15 units. Seminar will be given on their project work.

(iii) Ph.D.

The normal duration is not less than six semesters after initial registration (or nine semesters in the case of part-time registration). The registration of a candidate shall normally lapse if he has not submitted his thesis for examination after ten-semesters of full-time (twelve semesters in the case of part-time registration or an equivalent period pro-rata for an examination of part-time and full-time registration.

4)              Duration of the Program.

This modular course can be completed in one year on a full-time basis. Part-time students can take two – three years to complete the course. The part-time programme offers greater flexibility for those with demanding commitments at home or work.

5)              GENERAL ELIGIBILITY (ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS)

A good First Degree, preferably 2nd Class Lower Division or better in Post-Harvest Technology, Agriculture, Agricultural Biotechnology, Natural Resource Management, Biological Sciences and other related sciences. The School of Agriculture and Technology at UENR uses a holistic approach in selecting candidates for admission. Applicants are thoroughly reviewed to determine the full spectrum of their academic and personal achievements through examination and/or interview.

Eligible candidates for admission should normally be holders of a BSc degree with a minimum of Second Class Upper Division or its equivalent in relevant disciplines from recognized Universities. Applicants will be shortlisted and interviewed for admission. MSc holders who would want to upgrade themselves may also be considered for the MPhil programme

Specifically:

A candidate for Postgraduate studies must have met the normal undergraduate requirements for the corresponding undergraduate programme as stipulated by NAB

Candidate must have a BSc. degree in any of the above areas of Agriculture , or a BSc degree in a related discipline plus a PGD in Agricultural Education from a recognized university with a minimum of 2.5/4.0 CGPA.

  1. Candidate must have an MPhil in options above or its equivalent from a recognized university with a minimum of 3.0/4.0 CGPA

Candidates who qualify from the MSc to read the MPhil programme will continue for one more year. They will take a minimum of three elective courses of their choice before proceeding to the period of thesis work. It will end with a supervised written thesis by the student. Each student will be supervised by one or two supervisors

For Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D. in Agronomy/ Plant Pathology/ Crop Physiology/ Postharvest Technology/ Crop Protection

To be eligible for Doctor of Philosophy degree programmes (as stated for the MSc/MPhil programmes), the candidate should possess a master’s (MSc/MPhil) degree from a recognize University in the relevant field of study. However an exceptional second year MPhil/MSc student may upgrade into PhD Programme upon recommendation from the Department and School Board.

  1. Candidate must have already BSc. degree in Agricultural Sciences in any of the relevant option or a BSc degree in a related discipline from a recognized university with a minimum of 2.5/4.0 CGPA.
  2. Candidate must have already completed an (MSc/MPhil) in the above options or its equivalent from a recognized university with a minimum of 3.0/4.0 CGPA
  3. Candidate must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity for independent work, maturity, effective decision making and problem solving potentials.

6)              Mode of Course Delivery

The programme is offered through Lectures, practical field visits, studio exercises, tutorial and seminars, a learning oriented system allowing greater flexibility in learning while students continue with their regular professional work. The programme is offered in a mixed mode format. The approach uses print and electronic media in order to be responsive to the needs of the learner and also maximize the use of technology in course delivery. At the heart of the programme is excellent online learning materials developed by capable and competent resource persons from UENR and other recognized institutions.
