The Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) has inaugurated its branch of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani. The spectacular ceremony took place on Monday the 11th of August, 2014 and was graced by the presence of the National Chairman of FUSSAG, the General Secretary of FUSSAG, the Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress of Ghana, FUSSAG executives from the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape-Coast, University of Education, Winneba and the University of Mines and Technology.
In her welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of UENR, Prof. (Mrs.) Esi Awuah congratulated the executives and members of UENR-FUSSAG for the workdone so far and stressed the immense contribution of FUSSAG members to the development of the University community. She pledged Management’s continued support for the union and requested that the union adopts dialogue in all its dealings with Management.
Delivering the keynote address, Bro. Jacob Emmanuel Eshun, the National General Secretary of FUSSAG, highlighted the importance of unionised labour in achieving social development and for enhancing the welfare of union members. He further urged members of UENR-FUSSAG to be conversant with their Collective Bargaining Agreement and other relevant legal documents that stipulate their rights and responsibilities so they could effectively and appropriately dialogue on their rights with Management of the University.
The National Chairman of FUSSAG, Bro. Atimbila Baba, who inducted the local executives of UENR-FUSSAG into office charged them to be transparent in their communication and transfer of information between their members and the University’s Management.
The Secretary-General of the Trades Unions Congress of Ghana, Bro. Kofi Asamoah also emphasised the need for UENR-FUSSAG members to apprise themselves of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, the legal documents and the relevant labour laws that regulate their conditions of employment. He charged the executives to develop a health relationship with Management and also assured UENR-FUSSAG of the unflinching support of TUC-Ghana. Bro. Kofi Asamoah thereafter declared UENR-FUSSAG duly inaugurated.
Solidarity messages were also delivered by representatives from UENR branches of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Teachers & Educational Workers Union (TEWU), and the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).
Bro. Clement Kuuche Kuusoyir, the local President of UENR- FUSSAG, on his part thanked the national executives of FUSSAG and the TUC-Ghana for their support. He also thanked Management for their innovative quarterly meeting with all union leaders in the University and pledged to work hand in hand with Management to ensure a formidable working environment in the University.
Also present at the ceremony were the Pro Vice-Chancellor of UENR, Prof. Daniel Obeng-Ofori, the Registrar, Mr. Andrews K. Boateng and other staff members of the University.
