The Bono Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr. Asirifi Young, paid a courtesy call to UENR on Monday, May 8, 2023, at the Vice-Chancellor’s office. The visit was organized and led by Dr. Peter Appiahene, the Head of the Department for Computer Science and Informatics who is also a member of the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
At the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor of UENR, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako, welcomed and thanked Mr. Young for his visit to the school. Prof. Asare-Bediako used the opportunity to urge peaceful elections, particularly in the Bono region, as the country’s general election draws nigh.
In response, Mr. Asirifi Young expressed his gratitude for the invitation from Dr. Appiahene to collaborate with the University on election matters. He assured them of his commitment to ensuring peaceful elections in the University, including the staff Associations elections. Mr. Young commended Dr. Appiahene for his enthusiasm, contribution, and volunteer work, which led to his appointment as part of the EC and raised the University’s name to new heights. He said the visit was a step towards strengthening the relationship between the Electoral Commission and UENR in ensuring free and fair elections in Ghana.
Dr. Peter Appiahene also expressed his appreciation to the Management of UENR for accepting the invitation to collaborate with the Electoral Commission. He pledged to work with Mr. Young to ensure fair and peaceful elections in the country, in the Bono region, and in school elections. As an IT lecturer, Dr. Appiahene also emphasized the importance of teaching students IT skills to prepare them for the job market, as technology plays a crucial role in the Electoral Commission’s work.
The meeting was attended by the Ag. Pro VC Prof. John K. M. Kuwornu, the Registrar, Solomon Panford, Esq., APR; Dean, School of Natural Resources, Prof. Simon Abugre; Head of University Relations Office, Mr. Alfred Ohenenana Appiah; and a Junior Assistant Registrar at the Institutional Advancement and Alumni Relations, Mr. James Clarke Hayford.
