On August 16, 2024, the Earth Observation Research & Innovation Centre (EORIC) of the University of Energy & Natural Resources (UENR) hosted a stakeholder workshop at Sheila’s Executive Hotel, Sunyani, as part of the Ghana Skills Development Fund (GSDF) project. The workshop aimed to develop and implement a new Professional Satellite Communication (SATCOM) Certification Course designed to address the skills gap in Ghana’s satellite communication and telecommunications sectors.
The event, which featured representatives from academia, industry, and government agencies, began with a prayer by Ing. Dr. Martin Domfeh and a summary of the project’s objectives by Ing. Nana Ekow Nkwa Sey, the Project Co-Lead. Ing. Dr. Prince Antwi-Agyei, Head of EORIC, emphasized the importance of this specialized training in preparing Ghana’s workforce for the demands of the SATCOM industry.
A documentary showcased the collaborative efforts involved in developing the course, highlighting the contributions of various stakeholders. Mr. Evans Akpene Yaw Adom, the Project Lead, presented the progress of the GSDF project, including the development of the SATCOM course curriculum, the acquisition of advanced equipment, and the expansion of the EORIC office to accommodate a specialized training hub. He also emphasized the course’s alignment with the National TVET Qualifications Framework and its international recognition through the Global VSAT Forum.

During the discussion session, stakeholders expressed concerns about the course’s accessibility and affordability, particularly for rural participants. Mr. Adom assured attendees that the course would be competitively priced, with scholarships available, and offered in a hybrid format to reach participants across different regions.
Representatives from partner organizations, including the Ghana Education Service, TVET Services, and the National Communications Authority, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the initiative. The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Irene Asantewaa Appiah-Fei, followed by a networking session.
This workshop marks a significant step in advancing Ghana’s SATCOM sector, equipping future professionals with the necessary skills to drive innovation and economic growth.
