Petrobowl Competition

Some Students of the Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) have made a historic feat by emerging winners in the PetroBowl contest held during the SPE Ghana Chapter Student Conference on June 10, 2022, in Accra.

The students who represented UENR were Mr. Vincent Nana Boah Amponsah (Team Captain and outgone SPE UENR Chapter and PESA President), Mr. Giftson Aggrey, Mr. Cornelius Dorsogilaa, and Mr. Mike Fred McNaughton Eshun who are all final year students. They defeated 3-time reigning champions UMaT 30-10 in a pulsating final, having already beaten the University of Ghana team 90-40 in the previous round. UMaT defeated KNUST and All Nations University before the final round. This achievement marks UENR’s maiden win in the history of the competition in Ghana.

PetroBowl, founded by the Society of Petroleum Engineering (SPE) in 2002, matches SPE student chapter teams against each other in a fast-paced quiz competition. Students answer both technical and non-technical questions about the energy industry.

Other members of the team included Mr Noel Dapilee, Mr Nicholas Turkson and Mr Ebenezer Opare Gyimah. The team coaches were Mr. Nathaniel Nimo Yeboah and Mr. Ken Antwi who are national service personnel in the Department. Other students at the event were Mr. Yaw Sasah, the current UENR SPE Student Chapter President and Ms. Patricia Atarah, the Women Commissioner for the Petroleum Engineering Students Association (PESA).

The team was supervised by the Acting Head of Department and SPE Student Faculty Advisor of the UENR Chapter, Dr. Yaw Akyampon Boakye-Ansah and was supported by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako, Dean of the School of Energy, Prof. Samuel Gyamfi and the Lecturers in the Department. The UENR SPE Team is the National Champion and has been invited to compete either at the Regional (Africa) or World stage. The global event will be held in Houston, Texas on 2 – 3 October, 2022.

There were multiple events and sessions involving members of the industry, heads of divisions, and other tertiary students from sister Universities.
