Ms Faiza Umar Bawah is a lecturer at the University of Energy and Natural Resources’ Department of Computer Science and Informatics. She is presently enrolled at The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where she is pursuing a PhD in Computer Science. Educational Data Mining (EDM) and Learning Analytics are two of her primary study areas (LA). She believes that education should not be limited to the traditional classroom setting, but rather be a continuous activity that is unrestricted in terms of where and when knowledge can be transmitted, and that the learner should feel at ease while receiving knowledge. As education in Ghana develops toward an online era, there is a need to apply Machine Learning algorithms to educational data. With relevant insights into this data, the country’s educational system can be significantly transformed.
After participating in the Partnership for Enhanced and Blended Learning (PEBL) initiative, she became an expert in blended learning. This training armed her with the necessary information and abilities for converting face-to-face courses to blended learning. She was also chosen to participate in the Digital Education Master Class, which focused on the development of online courses. The availability of Learning Management Systems, as well as upcoming technology such as Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality, will result in the development of new pedagogies customized to the developing world’s environment and needs.
Faiza aspires to be a role model for incoming youth, particularly those interested in physical and computer sciences. She accomplishes this through her membership in the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), Ghana Chapter, Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, Ghana Chapter (WiSTEMGH), Internet Society, Ghana Chapter, Ghana Science Association, and Institute of ICT Professionals Ghana (IIPGH), BA Chapter.
