UENR WINS GRANT TO CONDUCT RESEARCH ON SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT IN GHANA, University of Energy and Natural Resources - Sunyani

The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani, has received funding from the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC) Environmental Sanitation Research Fund (ESRF),together with 12 other universities and research institutions across the country, to conduct research on waste management. The overall goal of the ESRF is to support research that will provide solutions and approaches on practical and sustainable ways of managing solid waste in Ghana, which will facilitate Government’s drive of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Presenting the UENR’s Grant Award Certificate to Management at a brief meeting held on 17 March 2022, the lead researcher from UENR on the project, Ing. Dr. Edward A. Awafo, disclosed that the team from UENR will focus on conducting research on recovering energy from municipal solid waste as a way of sustainably managing waste in Ghana.

Appreciating the efforts of the team, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako, underscored that these achievements by the University, are among the numerous activities that will make the University become one of the best in West Africa in the not too distant future. He also said that the project adds up to the University’s contribution to finding a lasting solution to Ghana’s waste challenges.
The UENR research team on the project are Ing. Dr. Edward Awafo, Dr. Gilbert Akolgo, Ing. Dr. Emmanuel Amankwah and Dr. Eric Akowuah, all with the School of Engineering. The Dean of the School of Egineering, Ing. Prof. Nana Sarfo Agyeman Derkyi, Ing. Christian Yeboah-Nuako, Director of Works and the Director of Centre for Grants, Research and Innovation (CeGRI), Dr. Peter Sanful, were also present at the meeting and commended the project team for their efforts.
