UENR TO LEVERAGE DIGITAL EARTH AFRICA INFRASTRUCTURE FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani, Professor Elvis Asare-Bediako has disclosed that the University is prepared to leverage the Digital Earth Africa Infrastructure for National Development. According to the Vice-Chancellor, the University is in the process of establishing an International Centre of Excellence in Big Data for Sustainable Development with the vision of adding value to the Big Data for informed decisions on harnessing public health, water, energy, and land resources for supporting the developmental agenda of West Africa.

The Vice-Chancellor was giving a keynote address at the African Statistics Week Celebration 2021, dubbed, “Big Data Showcase” under the theme; ‘The Key Role of Bid Data in Modernizing the National Statistical System to support Socio-cultural Development in Africa’ held at the GNAT Hall, Accra on Tuesday, 16th November 2021.

He further indicated that Big Data plays a significant role in everything we do as a country ranging from navigation systems through regional and national policy development. He emphasized that the SDGs can only be achieved through Big Data.

The African Statistics Day is an annual event celebrated across the continent on 18th November to raise public awareness about the important role statistics to play in all aspects of social and economic life in Africa. This year, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) marked the week from the 15th to 20th November 2021 to highlight a spotlight on how big data can deliver results for Ghanaian Policy. The program also featured the Pro Vice-Chancellor of UENR, Professor Felix Adekoya Adebayo, and Professor Amos T. Kabobah.
