The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Chamber of Communications, Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey has urged the Graduates of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani to activate the culture of integrity in their endeavours which is in accordance with the University’s motto: Knowledge, Integrity and Impact. He bemoaned the rate of such virtues lacking in the nation, which ought to be halted beginning with the Graduates.
Dr. Ing. Ashigbey indicated that many employers are disillusioned at the level of dishonesty among their employees, which compels them to solicit foreigners at the expense of potential Ghanaians. He thus charged the students to demonstrate the virtue of honesty and truthfulness as they enter the job market.
The CEO was speaking as the Guest Speaker at the 6th Congregation of the University held virtually on December 18, 2021, at the Sunyani campus. Ing. Dr. Ashigbey further remarked that integrity has become a notable prerequisite in the world of work and most graduates have abruptly ended their career progression due to a lack of these moral qualities. He advised the graduands to use the knowledge the University has impacted in them to provide the challenges facing the country. He additionally, said the country is currently in need of a generation of problem solvers who would move the nation to a better future.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako in his report to 6th congregation acknowledged that the University is challenged with infrastructure and other facilities to train more skilled students for the needs of the country. Nevertheless, the University has embarked on a number of projects, partnerships, and internationalization including student competitions that has placed the University for international recognition. Notable among them, Prof. Asare-Bediako said UENR through its Regional Center for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (RCEES) and Bochum University of Applied Sciences in Germany joined Solar Taxi to outdoor e-motorbikes which aims at reducing climate change and carbon emissions into the environment with a more energy-friendly mode of transport. He assured that management of the University would continue to strive to make UENR an enviable institution of academic excellence.
In the bid of the University to address the issues of insufficient Lecture Halls, the Vice-Chancellor mentioned that the University out of its Internally Generated Funds (IGF) has erected a 200 capacity pavilion to facilitate academic activities on campus. He added that a 100KW standby generator has been acquired to serve as a backup power unit for internet servers at the Information Technology Directorate and the University Clinic as well as other nearby offices.
The Vice-Chancellor applauded the graduands for their academic accomplishment and advised them to continue to be guided by the virtue of integrity and hard work, which are the hallmark of the University.
This year, One Thousand, Seven Hundred and Fifty-Three (1,753) students graduated from the University with Miss Rhoda Kwakyewaa Antwi a BSc. Biological Science student awarded the Best Student for the 6th Graduating Class of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) with FGPA of 3.90.
Giving the valedictory speech on behalf of her colleagues, the Valedictorian expressed gratification to the University for helping to shape their academic pursuit. She said despite the numerous challenges posed to them, she and her fellow students were not deterred to study and complete their University education
