First Ever Africa Undergraduate Exchange Programme and Establishment of the Agricultural Mechanization Demonstration Centre Launched at UENR, University of Energy and Natural Resources - Sunyani

The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in collaboration with Jiangsu University (JSU) and its Alliance Companies in China launched an exchange programme dubbed 2+2/4-year undergraduate programme and establishment of Agricultural Mechanization Demonstration Centre to train students in various disciplines and to boost the Agricultural industry through mechanization systems. 

The collaboration is to give an opportunity to successful candidates from Senior High schools offered admission to pursue undergraduate degree progammes with scholarships. The package involves selected qualified students from selected adopted Senior High Schools in Ghana to undertake the first two years of their bachelor’s degree at UENR and the last two years with Jiangsu University in China with the possibility of furthering through to the doctoral level.

Additionally, UENR would host an Agricultural Mechanization Demonstration Centre to be established by Alliance Companies from China where the Centre would host students for their practical sessions as well as offering financial support for the scholarships for the 2+2/4-year undergraduate degree programmes.

Chairman of the University Council, Prof. Kwasi Nsiah- Gyabaah giving the Chairman’s remarks

Chairing the function, the Chairman of the University Council, Prof. Kwasi Nsiah- Gyabaah, appreciated the collaboration and was confident the partnership between the institutions would advance the acquisition and transfer of knowledge and skills for national and global development. He expressed optimism that the collaboration would offer employment opportunities for the unemployed.

Vice-Chancellor of UENR, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako’s welcome address highlights the University’s vision to elevate Africa’s contribution to global issues

In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of UENR, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako highlighted the grand unveiling of the two collaborations which resonates with the University’s vision of serving as a symbol of a collective commitment in elevating Africa’s contribution to global development. He expressed his appreciation in witnessing this groundbreaking unveiling of the establishment of the African Agricultural Mechanization Demonstration Centre to empower and usher farmers and other stakeholders with the requisite technology and resources to overcome the challenges faced in farming. He used the occasion to appreciate the governments of Ghana and China for their unwavering support of the initiative and urged all stakeholders to support the partnership which comes with numerous developmental benefits. 

Speaking on behalf of the President of Jiangsu University (JSU), the Director of University Collaborations and the Coordinating Director of the Belt and Road African Sector, Prof. Daniel Adu reiterated the agenda of the initiative in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals 1,2 and 4. He emphasized on the importance of the two projects for the Bono Region and the country at large urging all stakeholders to embrace the initiative for its successful execution and sustainability.

He further assured Jiangsu University’s commitment to promoting international research and collaborations and recognized the immense contribution of the JSU Alumni, Ghana Chapter towards the execution of the projects in Ghana for the entire African Continent. The Dean of Overseas Education College at Jiangsu University, Gao Jing and other prominent officers from the University joined the event and actively participated via Zoom. 

Dignitaries present to grace the occasion were; the Bono Regional Minister, Hon. Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Hon. Gifty Twum Ampofo; Deputy Director General of Ghana Education Service; Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh, Traditional Leaders from Dormaa Ahenkro, Sunyani, Nsoatre and  Fiapre traditional councils, the Regional Director, Ministry of Food and Agriculture, and the Heads and students of selected Senior High Schools for the piloting phase of the 2+2/4-year undergraduate degree programmes as well as Staff of University of Energy and Natural Resources.
