The Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare on Friday, February 10, 2022, paid a working visit to the UENR. The visit forms part of the IGP’s official tour to the Bono Region. Arriving at the Sunyani campus, the IGP first paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako and other Management members at the University Council Chamber.

In his engagement with the Management, the IGP noted that he was on the University campus to listen to the University community and assured to address their concerns to make Ghana Police a better institution. The Vice-Chancellor after the meeting led the IGP and his entourage to the University Auditorium where he had a one-on-one session with the University Community.

Addressing the staff and students as well as some concerns raised during his interaction with them, the IGP noted that the Ghana Police is poised to work in partnership with academic institutions to ensure police visibility and undercover on campuses in the country. He also admonished the general public to help the Ghana Police to attain its integrity and respect while accepting the need for the Police to also do their work righteously to earn the public’s respect. “If we see Ghana as our motherland, with time the attachment will be weakened, but to see Ghana as a son land or daughter attracts the attention every parent will give to their child and this is the secret behind how Ghana Police sees the Country we work for now”, he revealed. The IGP further assured that the Ghana Police will continue to work for the Country’s security and safety.

In response to security on campus, the IGP directed the Bono Regional Police Command to deploy five motorbikes for patrol purposes at the University campus.  This, according to him, is in line with the Ghana Police Service’s resolve to enhance its visibility and combat crime on University campuses across the nation. He further assured the University Management that he will ensure the installation of CCTV cameras on the campus to deepen security surveillance on the campus.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako welcomed the IGP and his entourage. He expressed that the University is honoured to be part of the Institutions engaged as part of the IGP’s visit to the Bono Region. He said it is an indication of his humility and readiness to serve the people of Ghana.

The Vice-Chancellor, speaking further, acknowledged that peace and security are paramount to providing quality education on campus as parents would find it difficult to lease their wards to travel for academic purposes in the midst of insecurity. “In the midst of chaos, fear, insurrections and conflicts, parents would hardly allow their children and wards to travel across the county in pursuing higher education. This is why we do not take for granted the peaceful conditions in the country under your able leadership that has created a serene environment for academic studies”, the Vice-Chancellor added.

The Vice-Chancellor also noted that the University has collaborated with the Bono Regional Police Command to establish a Police Post on campus, to intensify patrol on campus to drastically reduce the crime rate. The Vice-Chancellor also used the opportunity to officially invite the IGP to the University’s 10th Anniversary celebration Grand Durbar, which is slated for April 1, 2023.
