The Regional Centre for Environmental Sustainability (RCEES) has been launched at a ceremony held in Sunyani.
The Centre established under the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) is to conduct internationally competitive training and research activities and turn out quality graduates who will drive the socio-economic development of the sub-region in Energy/Power development using an environmentally sustainable approach to bridge the skills gap between academia and industry.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Harrison Dapaah, in his address disclosed that the University was selected as one of the World Bank’s Centre’s of Excellence (ACE) in the area of Energy and Environmental Sustainability. He added that the World Bank through the Ministry of Education is providing an amount of $6.4 Million US Dollars over the first five-year period (2019-2024) to fund the Centre’s activities.
Prof Dapaah said the Centre will focus on building the capacity of faculty to deliver world-class teaching and conduct state-of-the-art research in energy and environmental sustainability. Again, the Vice-Chancellor mentioned that the Center at the end of the five-year period is to train fifty (50) PhD students and 250 Masters students in five (5) different MPhil programmes as well as short courses on sustainable energy technologies and projects.
