The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) is heading into the 2026 Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games with renewed confidence following a commendable performance at the maiden Honda Football Championship held in Tamale from March 24 to 28, 2026.
The University’s male football team secured a third-place in the competition, which brought together eight tertiary institutions. UENR topped its group to reach the semi-finals but narrowly missed out on a place in the final, eventually clinching third position after a decisive playoff victory.
Director of Sports, Dr. Ebenezer K. Amoh, described the team’s performance as encouraging, particularly given the limited preparation time and challenges faced by student-athletes. He disclosed that the players were ready to work. He, however, lamented some challenges, especially balancing academic work with training sessions.
He noted that the team’s performance in Tamale reflects its potential to compete strongly at the upcoming GUSA Games scheduled for May 5 to 15, 2026, in Accra.
Despite the positive showing, Dr. Amoh highlighted the need for increased institutional support, particularly in funding and athlete motivation. He explained that while some athletes are internally driven, many require external incentives to sustain competitive performance.
He also pointed out to structural challenges affecting sports participation, including limited facilities and the difficulty student-athletes face in balancing academics with competitive sports. Addressing these concerns, he said, would not only improve performance but also attract more talented athletes to the University.
Looking ahead to the GUSA Games, Dr. Amoh expressed optimism that with the right investment and preparation, UENR can elevate its standing on the national stage. “We have started well. With continued support from management, we can do even better and put UENR on the map in university sports,” he added.
