The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako has hinted at the University’s readiness to make the Bono Region greener. According to the Vice-Chancellor, he is willing to collaborate with the Bono Regional Coordinating Council to come up with a project called “Greener Bono Agenda” where trees will be planted all over the region which is in line with the government’s flagship programme of Green Ghana.
Prof. Asare-Bediako mentioned this, when he and the Registrar, Solomon Panford, Esq., APR joined the School of Natural Resources (SoNR) to commemorate the University’s version of the International Day of Forest, which was observed on March 21, 2022, under the theme “Forest and Sustainable Production and Consumption”.
Speaking further as the Chairman of the event which was held at the University Auditorium, the Vice-Chancellor noted that forests play key roles in various facets of daily lives, “as we all know when the last tree dies, the last man dies” he added. As a Plant Scientist, he encouraged everyone to plant a tree, especially on campus to beautify the environment. The Vice-Chancellor however opined that when a tree or a plant is not serving its purpose, it should be pulled down and grow one that will be useful.
The Dean for School and Natural Resources, Prof. Simon Abugre highlighted the academic programmes offered by the School, which can be beneficial to nature and humanity. He expressed his gratitude to the Forestry Commission Officers for recognizing the School’s contribution to national forest issues. To him, these compliments are due to the soft skills and confidence instilled in the students at the school apart from the knowledge imparted.
In attendance to mark the day were the FSD-District Manager for Mankranso, Mr Godwin Agyemang, Mr. Francis Brobbey, FSD-District Manager, Sunyani and other members from the Ghana Forestry Commission. They took turns to give educative presentations on the theme for this year’s celebration.
