The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako of UENR has called on the Ghana Fisheries Commission to partner with the University to build the inland economy and water resources in Ghana. Prof. Asare-Bediako noted the University is a key stakeholder of the Commission in developing and sustaining aqua-culture as well as water reserves in the middle zone of the Country.

This call was made by the Vice-Chancellor on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 when officials from the Fisheries Commission led by the Executive Director, Mr. Fred Kwasi Antwi-Boadu paid a courtesy call on him at his office. While receiving the officials, the Vice-Chancellor acknowledged that Ghana has a lot of inland water bodies that need to be preserved and protected from pollution caused by illegal mining. This, he said, has further impact on fish lives in the water and causes its extinction.

“UENR is capable in terms of expertise in energy, natural resources. And in fisheries we have established the Ghana Inland and Blue Economy Centre (GIBC) in UENR. The University wants to put more emphasis on the inland water to give it more support just as the coastal areas are already receiving such attention and support. See us as a key partner for the development of the fishery sector,” the Vice-Chancellor called.

He rolled out that the Commission has a series of projects and activities that would be beneficial to teaching and research in the University, adding that the Commission is willing to subsequently engage the Centre to formalize a mutually beneficial partnership to bridge the knowledge gap between industry and academia.
