Senior Staff Association of UENR Organizes Training Workshop on Emotional Intelligence

The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), UENR Chapter has organized a training workshop on emotional intelligence for its members. The programme themed “Emotional Intelligence: Diversity and Inclusion,” was graced by the Registrar, Dr. (Mrs) Georgina Asi Owusu and Chaired by Prof. Mrs. Mercy Derkyi, Director of Quality Assurance and Academic Planning Directorate (QAAPD).

The Chairperson of the UENR Chapter of SSA-UoG, Mr. Clifford Asomah Kyere, his welcome address highlighted the significance of emotional intelligence in the professional realm, decision-making, and the general well-being of individuals. He disclosed that the workshop aimed to equip participants with the necessary knowledge crucial for their personal and career advancement.

Addressing the Participants, the Registrar, Dr. (Mrs) Georgina Asi Owusu expressed her joy to grace the programme and praised the executives for taking the initiative to lead their professional training. She also commended the participants for attending and encouraged them to embrace change and innovation as integral aspects of their career development.

The Head of the Academic and Students Affairs Division of UENR, Dr. George Kwadwo Anane and Lead Facilitator for the training in his presentation called on the Senior Staff of UENR to recognise, understand and manage their emotions as well as influence the emotions of others in the line of their duties as University Administrators. According to him, it is important to acknowledge human beings as emotional beings because there is a tendency to experience emotional swings while working with people. Dr. Anane further highlighted that emotions influence people’s behavior, which can affect relationships when not managed with some level of intelligence. Addressing diversity and inclusion, he underscored the importance of self-awareness to better understand others while he promoted the technique of using “writing in reverse” to enhance effective communication.

Participants received presentations on preparing for promotion as well as corporate branding and sponsorship. The head of the Human Resources Division, Mr. Hayford Asare underlined the need for staff to know and understand the university’s status. Expounding that, promotional appointments are based on establishments not automatic. According to him, applicants must be knowledgeable in their field of work and the requirements for promotions. He also encouraged staff due for promotion to liaise with the Human Resources Division to file applications early to avoid delay.

Delivering on the topic: “Corporate Branding and Sponsorships, the Acting Head of General Administration, Mr. David Twumasi-Ankrah walked participants through the importance of corporate branding and the skills needed for winnable sponsorships. He explained the need for Senior Staff to embrace innovation and creativity to make the university appealing to corporate bodies. He established that corporate institutions look for sponsorship opportunities that align with their goals and value for money. He reiterated that participants should always be decent-ready and consciously build their own brands and that of the university, adding that building strong networks and showing appreciation for kind gestures should not be underestimated when seeking sponsorships and building a brand.

In her concluding statements, Prof. Mrs. Mercy Derkyi, the Chairperson for the training and Director of the Quality Assurance and Academic Planning Directorate (QAAPD), urged participants to demonstrate commitment to their roles by maintaining confidentiality, showing respect, and being prepared to serve. She praised the Senior Staff of UENR for proactively organizing a workshop to enrich their professional development.
