Gift Osei Agyemang
Senior Laboratory Technician
Biography
Gift Osei Agyemang is a Senior Laboratory Technician in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani, and the Research Director of the department's Hematology Research Group (HeMaRes). Gift studied Medical Laboratory Science at UENR from 2018 to 2022, earning a BSc.
Gift's work sits where laboratory haematology meets health AI. Through HeMaRes, Gift co-supervises final-year thesis projects on topics such as G6PD deficiency and sickle cell variants among blood donors, and platelet activation in pre-eclampsia. The group is also building AI microscopy tools that classify red cell shape and estimate red cell indices.
Outside the laboratory, Gift is a Biomedical Data Consultant for Emperor Software on Maame Dromo. This AI maternal health platform, funded by Grand Challenges Canada, runs in 29 Ghana Health Service public health centers. Field experience with it drives Gift's research question: does clinical AI stay reliable and fair once it reaches low-resource settings?
Gift co-authored a 2026 Viewpoint in The Lancet on human oversight of AI in health care, with Leo Anthony Celi and colleagues, and has published in PLOS Global Public Health. In 2026, Gift received the Top Innovative Paper Award at the International Communication Association's 76th Annual Conference in Cape Town for research on a culturally adapted mental health chatbot for young people in Ghana and Kenya.
