Mines and Built Environment
Sustainable Mineral Resources Development
Ing. Dr. (Mrs) Ophelia Ayamba is a lecturer in the Department of Sustainable Mineral Resources
Development, School of Mines and Built Environment. She is a mining engineer and scientist
with research interests in sustainable mining, resource management, occupational safety,
environmental management, climate change adaptation, and ecosystem valuation.
She holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from the University of Ghana (2019), an MBA in
International Management of Resources and Environment from Kwame Nkrumah University of
Science and Technology (in partnership with T.U. Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany) (2013), a
postgraduate diploma in Occupational Safety, Health, and Environmental Management from the
Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (2014), and a BSc in Mining
Engineering from KNUST (2005).
She is a professional engineer with the Ghana Institution of Engineering and a member of
Women in Mining and the Ghana Science Association. Her career spans industry, academia, and
research, including roles as a mine planning engineer at Golden Star Bogoso/Prestea Limited, a
part-time lecturer at Bolgatanga Technical University (formerly Bolgatanga Polytechnic), an
entrepreneur, and a research team leader.
She was awarded a grant under the Adaptation at Scale in Semi-Arid Regions (ASSAR) Project
(West Africa), funded by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the
UK’s Department for International Development (DfID).
