“TECH WITHOUT BORDERS” TO COMPLEMENT RESEARCH AT UENR, University of Energy and Natural Resources - Sunyani

Technology Without Borders, an international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Headquartered in Germany with a branch in the University of Energy and Resources (UENR), Sunyani, has hinted at its intention to establish a research laboratory to complement the existing facilities of the University.

This was disclosed by two board members of the organization, Mr. Dominik Lang and Mr. Stephen Takyi who visited the UENR branch and paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako and Management of the University on April 20, 2022, at the University Council Chamber.

Enumerating the roles of the NGO to Management, the Patron for the Regional Group, who doubles as the Dean of School of Engineering, UENR, Prof. Nana Sarfo Agyemang Derkyi noted that, Tech Without Border, has equipped many youths in the Universities to engage in projects geared towards improving the living conditions of deprived communities. He further mentioned that the organization has supported about ten (10) communities across Ghana with functional boreholes and regenerated wells to provide clean water for the indigenes. According to him, the training programmes by the NGO have been beneficial to UENR students under the organization to make them industrious.

As part of the research collaboration, UENR is to benefit from an egg hatchery incubator to be stationed  at the School of Agriculture and Technology (SAoT) at the Dormaa Campus for research and income generation purposes.

Speaking further on their activities, Mr. Stephen Takyi mentioned that the Organization would further partner with UENR to embark on agroforestry and recycling of plastic waste projects as well as empower women in cocoa farming in the Bono and Ahafo regions to produce more cocoa for chocolate production.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako on his part, lauded the NGO’s contribution to the development of the University and the nation as a whole. He acknowledged that the Research Laboratory Project is unique because of its community impact, and nurturing of the technical skills of the students. He assured the University Management of unrelenting support of the project.

Some of the Founding Members of the Regional Group (Tech Without Borders), Sunyani, present were Prof. Nana Sarfo Agyemang Derkyi, Prof. (Mrs.) Mercy Adutwumwaa Derkyi, Mr. Daniel Owusu and Mr. Isaac Owusu. In attendance at the meeting were some staff of the University and the Regional President of the NGO, Mr. Bashiru Ibrahim Tare, who is also the President of the National Union of Ghana Students-UENR Local.
