The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) has commenced the construction of a pavement walkway to improve student safety and accessibility on campus. Upon completion of phase 1 of the project, a short commissioning was held on Monday, 1st September 2025 at the School of Science block.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Elvis Asare-Bediako, emphasized that the welfare of students remains the university’s top priority. He explained that the pavement walkway, stretching from the Fiapre Roundabout to the Zinko Junction, is a key intervention to prevent accidents and promote safe access to campus. He expressed gratitude to the Student Representative Council (SRC) executives for initiating the project and encouraged the incoming leadership to continue it to completion.

SRC President, Mr. Andrew Danso, noted that although the existing walkway had been unapproved, it had nonetheless contributed to student mobility on campus. He explained that the poor condition of the route, especially during the rainy season, made access difficult. Danso described the pavement project as a “major milestone” of his administration, alongside refurbishing a 30-seat reading room and providing walkie-talkies to enhance campus security. He thanked university management, the Dean of Students’ office, and the student body for their support and guidance.

Adding his perspective, the Director of Works and Physical Development, Mr. Diyaudeen Mahmud Khalid said the project was born out of the urgent need to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility between the main campus and student hostels. While the original ambition was to pave both sides of the road, financial constraints narrowed the scope to cover a crucial stretch from the Fiapre Roundabout onto campus. He revealed that the over 600 square meters of walkway have already been paved valued at approximately 540,000 Ghana Cedis, providing students with a clean and safe route. Mr. Khalid also disclosed plans for an extension of the walkway from Sawmill to the Syndicate Hall, including wider paved areas in front of buildings to reduce dirt and wear on interior facilities.

The project which runs along the busy highway bordering the university is designed to safeguard students, enhance security, and provide a more comfortable daily campus experience.
