In efforts to bridge the gap between industry and academia, the Vice-chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako together with some top members of management have paid a working visit to Newmont in the Ahafo Region. The visit was to discuss strategic areas for collaborations between the two institutions.
At a meeting with the management of Newmont-Ahafo, the Vice-Chancellor who led the team from UENR presented on the key areas for collaboration. Notable among them was to introduce academic Programmes such as Sustainable Mining, Environment, Reclamation, Fishing and Aquaculture; Energy Management, Fire Monitoring and Management Support; and Application of ICT. Prof. Asare-Bediako also mentioned the need for industries to have a link to the Kenyasi Campus of the University through continuous Professional Development Programme (L & D), tailored programmes (Certificate, Degree, Master, and PhD) and adjunct Lectureship for industrial exchange of experience.
In his response, the General Manager of Newmont Ahafo Mine, Mr. Okyere Yaw Ntrama, was astonished about the University’s capacity and expertise to train students for the job market. He was optimistic that the visit would lead to a fruitful and sustainable partnership.
