The School of Arts and Social Sciences (SASS) on Thursday, July 28, 2022, held its first Annual Colloquium. The programme, which took place at the Tyco City Hotel, Sunyani was on the theme, “Sustainable Development in Ghana through the generation of knowledge in Arts and Social Sciences”.
In his welcome address, the Head of Department for the Department of Entrepreneurship and Business Sciences, Dr. Emmanuel Owusu Marfo hinted that the essence of the Annual Colloquium was toward the fulfillment of one of the practical functions of the university, which is in the area of research. He added that the colloquium was among other things meant to sharpen the research and presentation skills of members of the faculty and charged all those present to contribute to the ongoing research conducted by their fellow lecturers.
Delivering the keynote address, the Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences Professor Yaw Ofosu-Kusi appealed to the Dudely Seer and Amartya Sen concepts of Development and mentioned that sustainable development is indeed crucial for every economy in order to reduce poverty, inequality and unemployment. He emphasized that education is therefore key in the generation of knowledge and the impartation of key practical behavioural change toward Ghana’s effort to have sustainable development. He indicated that education that does not instill the virtues of hard work, dedication, trustworthiness and moral discipline cannot facilitate sustainable development. He, therefore, urged researchers in the field of arts and social sciences to lead in this course through their research activities.
The event saw didactic presentations from six faculty members of the school. The various research topics presented were in the areas of economics, marketing, language, communication, entrepreneurship and management. In total, about 44 members of staff of the School made up of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Business Sciences, and the Department of Languages and General Studies were present for this all-important event.
The programme was organized by the SASS Research Committee and moderated by Mrs Alberta Dansoah Nyarko Ansah.
