UENR PARTNERS WITH GHANA EDUCATION SERVICE ON STEM EDUCATION IN BONO REGION

UENR-GES MOU

With efforts to resource the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among Ghanaian students, the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani has entered in an agreement with the Sunyani West Municipal Education Service to jointly work and find possible areas of partnership in enhancing the quality of STEM education in the Bono Region.  

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) shall require UENR to collaborate with the Sunyani West Municipal Education Directorate to help generate the interest of pupils and students in the study of science and technology-related disciplines that the University offers, availing of UENR’s science and ICT laboratories to basic schools in the Municipality periodically to enable them to hold a practical aspect of the STEM subjects and to also liaise with the Directorate in organising in-service training for mathematics and science teachers.

Leading the University Management to sign the agreement on Monday, May 24, 2022, at the Council Chamber, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako stated that the collaboration is remarkable because it encourages internal partnership instead of frequently embarking on south-south cooperation for development. He indicated that UENR is ever ready to promote the study of STEM in the Bono region, adding that discussions are ongoing for the University to collaborate with the Regional Education Office to hold STEM quizzes for students at the basic levels. These he mentioned are all geared toward boosting the quality of education in the region and beyond.

On his part, the Sunyani West District Director of Education, Mr. Issah Baffoe before signing the agreement indicated that the partnership would augment his goal to improve the quality of students’ examination results in the District in the final examinations to enable them further their studies with ease. He was positive that the MoU would become a working document to benefit both parties.

In a related development, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, led the University to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sunyani Technical University (STU) to strengthen the existing relationship between the two Universities in the Bono Region.

The MoU is to afford the academic institutions to establish potential areas of collaboration, which include but not limited to joint research, publications and scientific dissemination,  students and staff exchange programs, collaborative application for research funding, access to laboratories, workshops, studios and libraries, joint supervision of postgraduate students thesis and dissertation among others.

The Vice-Chancellor of STU, Ing. Prof. Kwadwo Adinkra Appiah in his remarks before signing the agreement noted that the partnership is a new dispensation to have the two major public universities in the region work together for their mutual benefit and Ghana at large.

Also in his statement, Prof. Asare-Bediako expressed his happiness in the collaborative efforts by both institutions to liaise and identify a niche area for development. He was optimistic the mutual relationship established would move the two universities to become top-notch academic institutions in Africa.
