Plans are underway for a formal partnership between the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) and the GRATIS Foundation to strengthen applied engineering training, technical and vocational education, agro-processing, and technology transfer. The discussions followed a courtesy call by a GRATIS Foundation delegation led by its Regional Director, Rev. Ing. Ameli Atti Kojo-kuma, on October 19, 2026.

Welcoming the delegation, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elvis Asare-Bediako, highlighted the complementary strengths of both institutions, noting that UENR has the research capacity and expertise, and that access to the Foundation’s machinery and equipment would enable researchers to translate findings into practical outcomes. He expressed confidence that the process of formalising the partnership would be expedited. Furthermore, the Vice-Chancellor emphasised the importance of giving students structured opportunities to apply classroom knowledge in industry-based settings, noting the immense value such exposure offers for engineering careers and innovation.

Rev. Ing. Kojo-kuma outlined plans for joint research, industrial attachments, internships, and hands-on skills development for UENR students, with a focus on engineering disciplines including mechanical, agricultural, petroleum, and food processing engineering. He added that the GRATIS Foundation would provide access to machinery, equipment, and technical support to complement the University’s teaching and research activities, while supporting prototype fabrication, the development of post-harvest and agro-processing technologies, and the practical application of research findings. A key area of shared interest is equipment that could help reduce food losses and support agro-based enterprises.

The two institutions are expected to work together on the contents of a Memorandum of Understanding to provide a framework for collaboration in training, research, and technology transfer. The arrangement is intended to strengthen links between academic learning and industry needs while supporting engineering innovation and agro-processing development in the Bono Region.
